Define - Landscape Photography

Define - Landscape Photography

Landscape can be defined as being all the visible features and areas of land, often considered in terms of aesthetic appeal.

Four Annotated Images

This image shows landscape well and I think that the angle from which it is taken looks very effective and is also interesting. I like the colours within the image but think that this type of image would be tricky to replicate.

This image shows landscape well and presents a happy seaside setting. I really like how the image is very saturated as it helps to convey the happy and joyous mood. I also like the vibrant colours within the image.

I really like the colours within the image as they help to make it eye-catching and interesting. It clearly shows a landscape and I like how there is a tree in the foreground as this helps to create depth within the image.

This image clearly shows a landscape and is especially effective due to the bold and striking colours. I like how there is a large area of the sky in the image as this is an especially important aspect of the landscape.

Define - Composite Images

Composite Images

Composite images are images of which visual elements from separate sources are placed into a single image. This creates the illusion that all of the elements are part of the same source.

Four Annotated Images

I like this image as although it is surreal and composite, it works very well and at first sight, you are unable to notice the surreal aspect but on a further glance, you are able to see the surrealist fish which is present in the image.

I really like this image as again, it is simplistic but still surreal. I like the idea of a surreal object being in the cloud. I think that during the topic, I will try to replicate this idea within my work.

I like this image as it appears quite dark and gloomy. I like how the flies are bigger than the lizard which in real life is not the case and think that the background is very effective as it makes the image eye-catching and striking.

I like this image as it is so surreal. I like the element of the ladder as it makes the lion look very big while the person looks even smaller. I think that the image is very effective and I think I will try to replicate something like this in my own work.

Editing - Print Conventions and Preparation of Final Images

Print Conventions - Definitions

PPI - This refers to the numbers of pixels per inch in the images. This will affect the print size of the photo and will affect the quality of the output.
72 PPI - Used for websites and images in digital form.
300 PPI - Used when printing images.

White Balance Adjustment - The colour balance on a digital camera. It is the process of removing unrealistic colour casts. This allows objects that appear white in person to also appear white within the image.

Colour Temperature - Refers to the measure of a lights colour. A cold colour temperature would be towards the blue end of the spectrum whereas the warmer images are more towards the red end of the spectrum.

Dodge - Makes the image brighter.

Burn - Makes the image darker.

Print Resolution - The degree of sharpness of a printed image. Resolution is defined by pixels per inch.

Define - Portraiture

Define - Portraiture

Portraiture - The art of painting or taking portraits.

My interpretation is that portraiture is a painting, drawing or photograph which focuses on an individual. It is usually predominantly of the face which helps to portray emotion and expression.

Four Annotated Images

I really like how this portrait is original and shows an edit which adds interest to the image. I also like how this edit gives the idea of surrealism.

I like this portrait and think the way that the light is used and the colours around the face makes the image more appealing. This therefore shows the importance of the framing used in addition to the actual portrait.

I like how this portrait is made up of multiple faces as it creates a more abstract interpretation of portraiture. I also like the way that the image is in black and white as this shows tones within the faces.

This image shows emotion and mood very well. I really like the fitter that has been applied to the image as it helps to show the various tones which are present in the face of the subject which helps to make the image more interesting.

Define - Joiners

Define - Joiners

Joiners - A technique in which one picture is assembled from several overlapping images. This can be done manually with prints or by using digital image editing software, such as photoshop.

Four Annotated Images

This image is quite a complex joiner as it consists of many images which are layered together. However, for this reason, the image is very effective and is also very interesting and eye-catching.

This is a very interesting example of a joiner by David Hockney. I really like the distorted perspective that the edit has produced. It is very effective and has transformed an quite boring object to photograph into a very interesting image.

This is a more simplistic example of a joiner. In this example, I like how the images are all arranged at the same angle which allows the audience to see variation in colours in the different images. This looks especially effective on the black background.

I like this image as it is similar to the one above. I also like how the colours in the images are varied which helps to show the different layers within the image.

Define - Depth

Definitions - Depth

Depth - The distance from the top or surface of something to the bottom of something.

Wide angle - When a camera has a short focal length and hence a field covering a wide angle. This gives a greater perspective than can be seen with the human eye.

Depth of Field - The amount of distance between the nearest and furthest objects which appear in acceptably sharp focus in a photograph. It is the measure of how much the image is in focus. Depth of field is the sharp area surrounding the point of focus.

The closer the subject to the camera, the more shallow the depth of field.
The higher the f/stop, the wider the depth of field.
The lower the f/stop, the narrower the depth of field.

Four Annotated Images

Shallow Depth of Field -

This image shows a shallow depth of field and is effective due to the fact that the eyes are in focus while the rest is not. This helps to make the image more interesting and attracts the viewers eye to the main focus point in the image. It is likely that this image was shot with the f/stop value being around f/5.

This image is very effective as it uses a clear narrow depth of field. I also like how this image has the focused area to one side of the image as this creates a more interesting image. It is likely that this image was shot with f/stop value of around f/4.

Wide Depth of Field -

This image uses a wide depth of field and a wide angle. This allows the image to show more perspective and therefore helps to make the image more interesting. It is likely that the f/stop value was around f/22.

This image uses a wide depth of field and this makes the image more interesting and attracts the eye to more of the image. I also like the way that the image is colourful as it makes the image more attractive and eye-catching. It is likely that the f/stop value was around f/22.

Define - Movement

Define - Movement

Movement - The action or process of moving or being moved. Related to motion.

Four annotated images

This image shows movement in the form of the duck's wings. I like how the body is still but the wings are blurred. This makes the image successful in creating the feel of movement within the image.

This image shows movement well as the blurred areas show the lines of motion. I think that this creates a more obvious representation of movement.

I really like this image as it shows the movement of water which is quite original and unique. I also like the colours in the image as I feel it draws the viewers eye more to the image.

This image shows movement well due to the lines which are coming off the figures. These look especially effective due to the fact that the bright colours are on a black background which makes them stand out more.

Define - Reflection

Reflection Definition

Reflection - The throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat or sound without absorbing it.

Although it is not strictly formal element, reflection is an important consideration in framing a composition and establishing balance.

Framing - Refers to when you add a frame inside the frame. Having a frame inside the frame adds more focus to the scene.

My own interpretation is that reflection is an mirror image of something.

Four annotated images

In this photo, the audience are only able to see the figure in the form of the reflection in the glasses. I like how you are able to see the horizon line in the reflection as it gives the viewers something to focus on in the reflection image.

This image is very effective as the reflection and the real image form as one due to the colours being the same in both. It looks especially effective due to this as it doesn't have a horizon line. I also really like interesting subject of the picture which is the bird as it makes the image more eye-catching.

This image looks especially effective in black and white as it allows the audience to focus more on the reflection as it is bolder. A also like how the reflection is in water so therefore is only in some areas.

This photograph is very effective as it shows the same reflection in three instances. I also like how the images are distorted differently in the three different rain drops. It is also effective as you can see the flower which is reflected behind the water droplets.

Define - Shape

Shape Definitions

Shape - An area enclosed by a line. It can be shaded or may just be an outline. Shapes can be geometric or irregular.

Negative Space - Refers to the empty space around the subject or focus on the image. In the image below, the black area in the shape of the frog is the negative space.

Four Annotated Images

This image shows shape well due to the uniform heart shapes which are in the leaves. The shapes stands out well due to the bright colours of the leaves against the darker background. The image is also successful in presenting shape due to the added shape of a circle which are present in the form of the water droplets.

This image is very eye catching and striking. It uses negative space to create a heart shape from the elephant's trunks. This is made to stand out more due to the backdrop of the bright sunset. Although this photograph is extremely eye-catching and appealing, it would be extremely difficult to recreate!

This image uses the pencils to create a circle shape. In this image, I like how the colours of the pencils assist in the formation of the circle on the white background. The colours of the pencils also help to make the image more interesting and attractive.

This image is effective due to the intricately engraved shape in the fruit. This image is also appealing due to the composition of the shot as the fact that the fruit is positioned to one side of the frame makes the image more interesting and eye-catching.

Define - Tone

Tone Definitions

Tone - Tone refers to the overall lightness or darkness of an image. This could be a shade or how dark or light a colour appears.

Gamut - Range in relation to tone.

Tone is often used to emphasise form in an image and tone is created by the way the light falls on a 3D object.

Four Annotated Images

This image presents tone very well due to the darker and highlighted areas which are present in the image. The lions mane shows tone the best due to very dark areas towards the edges of the image and the more highlighted areas that are present more towards the centre.

This image presents tone well due to its black and white filter. There are a wide range of tones which are present in the hands which makes the image quite interesting. Also, the way that the hands stand out against the dark background makes the image very effective.

This image shows an extremely simplistic interpretation of tone due to the fact that only two tones are present in the image. However this simplistic interpretation is quite effective and eye-catching due to the way that the stones are arranged.

This image presents tone in a very complex form due to the many different tones which are present in the photo. The image is very effective due to the black and white filter. This allows the tones to be more prominent and obvious.
