Thursdays photography lesson was the first time I had used a professional camera and was the first time I had been given a specific topic to follow when I was out shooting. It was a new experience that I found very enjoyable. The topic I was given was 'lines'. During the lesson and my  time capturing images, I found that everywhere I looked there was something that could be related to or classed as 'line'. At the start of the lesson, I found it challenging to know what to photograph but by the end was finding it much easier. Below are two images I captured during Thursday's session.

This is an image of a tree trunk surrounded by lavender plants. I thought this showed vertical lines because of the lavender plants are all going in the same direction. This was my favourite image as I really liked the colours in the tree trunk and also like the vibrant green stems which surround it. I  also like how the background is grey as this helps the colours to stand out more. I thought this photograph had a tranquil feel to it.

I then edited my favourite image using photoshop and selecting and manipulating the colours. I really like this edited image as it makes the main focus point in the image more obvious and eye catching. It continues to show lines as you are still able to see the lavender plants but are more drawn towards the tree trunk, as it is now the main focus point which was my intention.

This is another photo that I took during Thursdays session. This is probably my worst photo and was taken during the start of the shoot. Although the photo does show line, in both the brickwork and the bars, I feel that this photo lacks meaning and does not inspire the viewer. Also, the colours  in the image do not make it very appealing.

Idea Development

If I were to go out and shoot for the topic of 'lines' again, I would look more into the less obvious forms of lines (such as plants and trees) as I believe they created more successful and interesting images. I would also experiment with taking the photos from different angles to try to add interest and perspective to my photos. In addition, I would visit more places, such as woodlands to try and get better scenery for my topic. In addition, I would use the following shots to inspire my work. This would hopefully help me to explore more natural forms of lines.

Line - Straight Images

I chose this image as one of my favourites as I really like the multiple lines that are in the image. I especially like the shadow lines as I think they make the image more interesting. I also like how the viewers eye is lead to the window at the end. I think it creates a good feel of perspective.

I really like this image because of the curved lines of the bench. I also like how the light has reflected off the bench as it makes the eye more drawn to this area of the photograph. The background of the bricks demonstrates both vertical and horizontal lines which contributes to a larger depth of field of the image. This photograph was inspired by the previous image of the bench in my image bank.

This is one of my favourite images as it demonstrates vertical lines using both the tree and also the plants. I really like how the tree trunk is the main focus point on the image and how the lavender plants are slightly blurred. In addition to the aspect of line, I really like the colours shown in this image as they are very bold and striking. To get this image, I had to get quite low down in order to include both the plants and the tree into the shot.

This image is effective as it clearly presents the topic of line and is unlikely to be confused with any other formal elements. I like the contrast of the image and also like the added interest of the pole which is towards the left hand side of the image.

I like this image as I feel that it also clearly shows lines. I like the way that there is variations in the direction that the lines are going in and also like the contrast of the red bricks and the white wood as I feel as though this adds interest to the image and makes it more appealing for the viewer.

 I like this image as it has a very calm feeling to it. I also really like how the lines are natural and also like the vibrance of the green and also like how there are horizontal lines on the tree trunks.

 This is one of my favourite images because I really like the contrast of the black background and the white spiders web. I also like how the lines lead your eye to the centre of the web. I like how this image has two types of lines in it, including curved lines and leading lines. In addition, I really like the detail of the web and especially like how you can see the water droplets.

With this image, I really like how there is both diagonal lines and vertical lines and like the contrasting colours of the red and green. I also like how you can see the detail of the red wood in the background.

With this image, I really like how the lines show the curve of the bench. I also like how the bench is in focus but the background is blurred.

Here, I like the boldness of the curved road and also like how the lines on the road stand out and lead the viewers eye to the end of the road.

This image explores a more natural form of line which could also be regarded as pattern in the form of the zebra. In this image, I really like how there are lines presented in the backdrop. This therefore makes for a very interesting vision when the lines in the zebra meet the backdrop.

Horizontal Lines - A line that follows the horizon. Horizontal lines can be used to represent rest, timelessness and permanency. Horizons are a common type of horizontal line. Horizontal lines can also make photographs seem static. They also convey tranquillity.

Vertical Lines - A line which travels either up or down. Vertical lines have the ability to convey different moods such as power and strength.

Diagonal Lines - Diagonal lines are neither horizontal or vertical and usually cut straight across the image. Diagonal lines work well to draw the viewers eye through the photograph. They create points of interest and intersect with other lines in the image. They also convey the idea of change, action and movement.

Curved Lines - A line which flows fluently and is not a straight line. Curved lines create calm and quiet feeling in a photograph.

Leading Lines - Leading lines refers to composition whereby the viewers eye is attracted to lines that lead to a specific point on the image.

Converging Lines - Two or more lines which meet at the same point. In photography, converging lines can be used to show depth.

I feel that the above images all show lines well and also show different types of lines which create different effects and feelings within the images.
